Henry Clay Trumbull

Picture of Henry Clay Trumbull, the father of the Sunday School movement, in 1905Henry Clay Trumbull was a minister and a leader in the thriving Sunday School movement during the 19th century. He was a chaplain for the Union army during the U.S. Civil War, and spent time as a prisoner of war in the South. He later became an associate of the evangelist D. L. Moody, and for 28 years, he was the editor of the Sunday School Times.

In all, Trumbull authored 38 books. He is perhaps best known today for his Hints on Child Training. This book meets a need that almost no other book has been able to fill.

Hints on Child Training

To develop virtue in our children, we have to be able to train their will. Will training goes hand in hand with the training of the conscience. Of what use is it to know right from wrong, and to desire to be good, if we lack the willpower to make a proper choice?

Parenting  books have been around almost as long as the printing press, and thousands of parenting books have been written since 1891, but Trumbull’s book stands the test of time. Even though more than a century has gone by of the development of spiritual and scientific parenting methods, this book still continues to speak to us today.
